They thinks this is funny. I agree with They.

Mo. Man Legally Changes His Name to 'They'

"'They do this,' or 'They're to blame for that.' Who is this 'they' everyone talks about? 'They' accomplish such great things. Somebody had to take responsibility," he [They] said.

Utilities for Palm Desktop and Outlook

Ironically, after I made the switch to Outlook I found a suite of cheap software that will sync Palm Desktop with Outlook.

Ugh. Well at least with this blog I've bookmarked the site, and can always go back to it if things in PIM-land get screwed up.

More evidence of a Google browser

It looks like Google is planning a move into the browser business. And slowly taking over everything on the net.

And they are hiring some really good people. Read about it here.

I'm not sure I mind. The article includes the relevant WHOIS info for gbrowser.com -- which Google bought in late April.

I will definitely rush out and try their new browser. IE is really frustrating, and Firefox hasn't sold me yet.

Bar Crowd Kills Man Over a Cigarette

The Article on Cleveland.com: Search

I'm going to copy the whole thing in the name of Fair Use :-)

A crowd outside a Denison Avenue bar beat a Cleveland man to death early Sunday after the man apparently refused someone's request for a cigarette.

Ricardo Leon, 23, of West 67th Street, died shortly after being taken to MetroHealth Medical Center at 2:46 a.m.

Police have arrested a 25-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman in connection with the beating. They have not been charged, Cleveland police spokesman Lt. Wayne Drummond said.

The beating occurred outside Partners Pub at West 62nd Street and Denison Avenue.

Partners Pub owner Bob Schmidt said an employee told him that Leon had been drinking amiably with other customers until someone asked him for a cigarette and he refused. A doorman tried to break up the fight, which spilled out into the street, "but there were too many people for him," Schmidt said.

Kim Kaminski, who owns a building next door to the bar and recorded some of the beating on videotape, said at least three or four people took turns kicking Leon. Kaminski said he gave the videotape to police.

Opening a Kryptonite Lock with a pen

Bike enthusiast and network security consultant Chris Brennan
discovered that expensive Kryptonite bike locks could be opened using a
ballpoint pen. In this video, he opens one within seconds. (QuickTime,
26 seconds)

The video is on Wired, and they also have a cool article about it.

Broadway For A New America .............

I'm doing some balloon deco for this really cool broadway-type show. Lots of stars, and I think the guy who played the lead in my brother's high school musical (Billy Porter) is there. Small world!

I'll add more after the show.

News - Scientists Invent Fly Eating Robot

This new robot catches flies, "digests" them, and uses the released energy for fuel. It's not quite ready to be mass-marketed in the everglades, but it's a step. Anyone on this blog know anything about robots?

BU Alumi Club

The old Bay Tower room in Boston is now the State Room thanks to the hands of fellow BU Alum Jim Apteker. The State Room is more a function hall than a restaurant but the view is the same. At lunch it is a members only restaurant, and BU alumni are all invited to join the club thanks to a shining BU endorsement.

My thoughts, granted it is BU style but why would BU endorse such a venue and why would they ask BU? Answer: The founder, in addition to being an alum, is a member of the executive board of the university's alumni association ... go figure, cronyism and school pride - I think I might become a member.

What the Army reads

Ever wonder what the people in the military read? Just in case they don't have the intellectual curiosity to peruse the library's offerings, the military actually tells them what to read! And the list is pretty interesting, both for what it includes, and what it does not include. For example, the marines suggest Starship Troopers.

U.S. Army Chief of Staff's Reading List
“The Professional Reading List is a way for leaders at all levels to increase their understanding of our Army’s history, the global strategic context, and the enduring lessons of war."

Marine's Reading List
"The Commandant of the Marine Corps has prescribed a list of books that he felt were important for Marines to read. The list is divided into sections based on rank. Marines are expected to read at least two books per year from this list. The lessons learned from the books can be used to become better leaders both in and out of The Corps."

Air Force Reading List
"To sustain our dominance and understand the world in which we operate, we must develop a wider perspective and an appreciation of views other than our own. I encourage each of you to make time for professional reading as part of your continuing development as Airmen."

The Memory Hole > Justice Department Censors Supreme Court Quote

Because of "National Security" the Justice Department is allowed to redact some of the ACLU's court filings in their battle over the Patriot Act before they are published.

You would expect the redactions to black out names of informants, security statistics, tecniques, etc. But nope. They blacked out this quote from the Supreme Court:

"The danger to political dissent is acute where the Government attempts to act under so vague a concept as the power to protect 'domestic security.' Given the difficulty of defining the domestic security interest, the danger of abuse in acting to protect that interest becomes apparent."

Ironically, this is exactly what the problem is. It's a power grab under the rubric of 'National Security.'
